Poem

A Prisoner's Lamentation----Passing by Lingdingyang Wen Tianxiang (1236-1282)

I've taken pains reading classics to be an official,
Four bleak years have been spent in thick battles.
Our land is broken like catkins drifting in the wind,
I roam here and there as duckweed buffeted by the rain.
How panic-stricken I was retreating before the Tartars!
Being a captive, I lament over my solitary confinement.
Who can avert his death since time immemorial?
Let my heart remain true to shine in the annals.

Poem name

Passing by Lingdingyang Wen Tianxiang (1236-1282)

Author introduction

Wen Tianxiang was a scholar-general in the last years of the Southern Song Dynasty. He is a popular symbol of patriotism and righteousness for his resistance to Mongol army invasion of Song and refusal to yield to the Yuan Dynasty despite being captured and tortured. People consider him as one of three heroes of the Song's last years.

Poem background

This poem was written at that time Wen Tianxiang was defeated and be captured by Mongol army. He refused to surrender and wrote this poem in order to express his worry, lonely, and patriotic emotions.

Poem

I have plugged away at imperial examination and passed it to be an official with painstaking. Four bleak years have been taken in many battles.

Our country is broken as catkins drifting in the storm wind. My life experience is unstable like duckweed buffeted by the torrential rain.

How fearful I felt about worrying my emperor when I was defeated by Mongol army. How lonely I experience about my life after being a captive.

Since death is unavoidable to everyone throughout history. What we should strive for is a loyal heart to be recorded in the historic book gloriously.
